Rocket Man

Through the thick and thin and the thick again, whenever it was a tough time at work or in my personal life, this Elton John song brought a lot of bittersweet introspection and eventually helped to bring balance to the force, per se. There's something EVEish about it, when sometimes it feels like only other capsuleers understand the experiences you have and your mindset. Listening to it always turned the loneliness of the lyrics into feelings of camaraderie and brought memories flooding back of the great laughter and warm hugs and such I'd shared with players and coworkers over the years.

"Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long Long Time)" by Elton John

She packed my bags last night, pre-flight
Zero hour: 9:00 a.m
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the Earth so much, I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

[Chorus]
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no! I'm a rocket man
Rocket man! Burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no! I'm a rocket man
Rocket man! Burning out his fuse up here alone

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact, it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
Rocket man! Rocket man!

[Chorus]
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no! I'm a rocket man
Rocket man! Burning out his fuse up here alone

A Toast To New Eden

I gave this toast a few times throughout the years, the first being at an EVE Online player meeting in 2014 following the closure of World of Darkness.

I figured someone might want to take this and adapt it for their own uses.

First, to the comrades no longer flying with the CCP fleet, we will forever honor your space dreams and will look upon each star you helped place in the heavens of new Eden with pride and nostalgia.

You will be missed. As they say in Iceland: skál !

And now to the players, the great storytellers, collaborators, playwrights and actors of the eve universe.

May your invention always yield tech 2 results
May your ISK always be doubled
May your ECM always land on enemy logi
May the loot fairy always shine on you
And may your skill queues always be full.

Here's to your shields holding forever
If not may your armor never fail
If not may your structure last
If not may your space honor keep you alive
And if all else fails may your pod get the fuck out!

Fly safe pilots
IN UNISON: Fly safe!

Get to know Ob Komad (ex CCP Manifest)

This little corner of the internet is going to be a mix of current thoughts about EVE Online, future thoughts about New Eden and nostalgia. I've got to re-engage my writing braincells a bit given years of primarily editing other people's material from EVE Online dev blogs to internal CCP blogs to video scripts and all sorts of things in between. Most of my creative writing has been involved around very short form social media stuff for EVE, but I have had the chance for an occasional tabletop roleplaying background essay to set the seen for my players when I am the game master. So bear with me :)

Might as well kick off this blog with some old interviews

And the two talks I gave at EVE Fanfests, which give my thoughts on both what EVE is and how to avoid stagnation in your own EVE journey.
