Rocket Man

Through the thick and thin and the thick again, whenever it was a tough time at work or in my personal life, this Elton John song brought a lot of bittersweet introspection and eventually helped to bring balance to the force, per se. There's something EVEish about it, when sometimes it feels like only other capsuleers understand the experiences you have and your mindset. Listening to it always turned the loneliness of the lyrics into feelings of camaraderie and brought memories flooding back of the great laughter and warm hugs and such I'd shared with players and coworkers over the years.

"Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long Long Time)" by Elton John

She packed my bags last night, pre-flight
Zero hour: 9:00 a.m
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the Earth so much, I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

[Chorus]
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no! I'm a rocket man
Rocket man! Burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no! I'm a rocket man
Rocket man! Burning out his fuse up here alone

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact, it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
Rocket man! Rocket man!

[Chorus]
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no, no, no! I'm a rocket man
Rocket man! Burning out his fuse up here alone

  1. I love that song and all of his work, really. Lots of memories tied up in Elton John songs for me, too. If you have an alt in Signal Cartel and fly with our AI co-pilot ALLISON activated, turn her volume all the way up for a fun surprise. - Mynxee

    1. My only regret is that I sang it karaoke at Fanfest after having 2 too many drinks. Didn't anticipate the karaoke waitlist would be THAT long. Would have nailed it otherwise!
